News from the Government of Andalusia
Counselor Antonio Sanz at the Advanced Command Post (PMA). The vice president of the Board and counselor of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, has reported that the Board of Andalusia has more than 200 troops and 22 aerial means deployed in the tasks of extinguishing the forest fire declared this Sunday in Benahavís (Málaga). The Andalusian Forest Fire Emergency Plan remains activated in the emergency phase, operational situation 1. Antonio Sanz has indicated that "the first objective from the beginning has been to protect the population." The Emergency management maintains the preventive confinement of the urban area of Benahavís and the La Coja urbanization, as well as the preventive removal of about 50 people from Montemayor, corresponding to about 20 homes, mostly second homes and have not required relocation. EMA 1-1-2 received the first call at 12:37 p.m., warning of a fire near the A-7175 highway, between the Rosario hermitage and the urban center. Given its evolution, Antonio Sanz, as director of the INFOCA Plan, elevated the emergency to operational situation 1 at 1:41 p.m. At 2:34 p.m. an Es-Alert message was sent to order the confinement of the population of Benahavís. The vice president specified that the purpose of the notice was the safe confinement of the area. An antenna was affected by the fire, which caused the loss of mobile coverage in part of the area and could prevent some phones from receiving the message; although the warning has been transferred with the operations in the area and social networks, since the Es-Alert is another warning instrument that is added to the traditional ones. The incident has been transferred to the telephone operator to restore the service or enable an alternative solution. The first vice president explained that "the fire has a very elongated perimeter and is conditioned by the wind and orography." The area between the origin and the urbanizations has evolved favorably, although hot spots and small reactivations remain. The most active part is located from the residential areas to the north, where the teams work on both flanks and in the head. "The main objective is to try to contain the advance of the fire as much as possible, to close the head," explained Antonio Sanz. The work focuses on protecting Montemayor, preventing the fire from gaining potential to the north and, in case of advance, directing it towards the perimeter of the Pujerra fire of 2022, where the lower fuel load could reduce its intensity and facilitate extinction work tonight, the counselor has also noted. The fire is characterized by being a wind fire with topographic influence, that propagates along crest axes and slopes facing the wind. The orography, made up of numerous ravines and basins, makes extinction work difficult. During the afternoon, an easterly wind blew at between 30 and 35 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 50. Starting at 10:00 p.m., a small change to a northeasterly component is expected, but with a noticeable drop in intensity, with a speed of 14 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 25 km/hour maximum. Sanz has warned that "it will be an active night" and has indicated that the night device will be specified depending on the evolution of the fire. A new coordination meeting is scheduled at 10:30 p.m. to plan the work for the entire night and assess the situation of the residents of Benahavís who could return to their homes; although in a situation of preventive confinement. The counselor also explained that the health services have treated three people. A forest firefighter has suffered trauma to his wrist. An individual, a 78-year-old man, has external burns on 30-35% of his body surface and has been evacuated by medical helicopter to the Regional University Hospital of Malaga. Another individual has been treated for mild smoke inhalation and discharged at the scene. The vice president has confirmed that, so far, no homes have been affected, despite the fact that the fire has spread through urbanized areas. Specific damage has been recorded to exterior elements, such as fences, terraces or accesses. One lane of the A-7175 also remains closed at the entrance to Benahavís, while analyzing the evolution of hot spots and the possibility of facilitating the return of those who are outside the municipality. The device brings together 205 troops, 22 aerial vehicles and two bulldozers. The aerial operation consisted of a coordination aircraft, two heavy amphibious aircraft, two light helicopters, six semi-heavy helicopters, two heavy helicopters, a command helicopter, six cargo planes on the ground and two light amphibious planes that will be intervening until sunset. Seven groups of forest firefighters work on land, four BRICA, one EMIF, six operations technicians, two extinction technicians, two Environmental agents, a Mobile Meteorology and Transmissions Unit (UMMT), the Forest Fire Medical Unit, the command module and the Systems Unit (drones), three fire engines and two bulldozers. EMA 1-1-2, EMA INFOCA, Environmental Agents, the Málaga Provincial Firefighters Consortium, Málaga Firefighters, Local Police, Civil Guard and the 061 health services participate in the work. Resources from different municipalities and the Civil Protection groups of Estepona and Marbella have also been mobilized. Antonio Sanz thanked the response of all the organizations and entities mobilized and the collaboration of the Benahavís City Council. The municipality has activated its Municipal Emergency Plan and care is maintained for vulnerable people and neighbors who need access to medication. The Andalusian Emergency Agency asks the population to exercise extreme caution, Follow the instructions of the operations and do not approach the fire area to avoid unnecessary risks.

What happened in Benahavís?
The fire was reported on Sunday 13 September 2026 in the Ermita del Rosario area of Benahavís. As the incident developed, the Junta de Andalucía activated the emergency phase of the regional wildfire response plan.
Residents in Benahavís received an ES-Alert advising them of the situation, while confinement measures were introduced in the municipality. Around 50 people in Montemayor were also moved away from the affected area as a precaution.
More than 200 personnel were deployed as part of the emergency response, with INFOCA forest firefighters and aerial resources working alongside Emergencias 112, CPB Málaga firefighters, municipal fire services, police, Guardia Civil and other emergency teams.
Benahavís road closures and access
Road restrictions can be introduced or lifted at short notice during a wildfire, both because of changing fire conditions and to keep routes clear for emergency vehicles.
The A-7175 has been among the routes affected during this incident. The live system on this page monitors relevant DGT information and is intended to highlight road restrictions affecting Benahavís and the principal routes serving the municipality whenever official structured information is available.
Drivers should never attempt to pass a road closure or use minor rural roads to bypass emergency restrictions. Smaller roads may themselves be affected by smoke, fire, firefighting operations or emergency traffic, even if a navigation app suggests they remain open.
Travelling in or around Benahavís
If you need to travel, check the latest official road information before setting off and allow emergency services priority at all times. Do not travel towards the affected area simply to observe the fire.
If you receive an ES-Alert
Emergency alerts sent directly to mobile phones should be treated as official instructions. Read the complete message carefully and follow the directions given by the authorities.
If residents are instructed to remain indoors, keep doors and windows closed and avoid unnecessary journeys. If an evacuation or preventive relocation is ordered, follow the routes and instructions provided by emergency personnel rather than relying solely on normal navigation apps.
Conditions around a wildfire can change quickly. Wind direction, smoke, terrain and firefighting operations can all alter which areas or roads are considered safe.
Information for residents who do not speak Spanish
A large part of the Benahavís community is international, and some of the quickest official information during an emergency is published only in Spanish. One purpose of this page is therefore to make important local information easier to understand.
Where an official announcement is issued only in Spanish, the live system may provide a short English summary explaining the subject of the update. The original source remains linked so that readers can always check the complete official wording.
For safety-critical information such as confinement measures, evacuation instructions or road closures, summaries are deliberately conservative. They are intended to explain what an official notice concerns rather than replace it with an interpretation.
For emergency instructions, the original official notice always takes priority over any English summary shown on this page.

Why we created this page
The Benahavís Collection normally focuses on property, places and everyday life in Benahavís. During a significant local emergency, however, having reliable information in one easily accessible place can be particularly useful for residents, property owners and visitors who may otherwise be following several Spanish-language sources at the same time.
Our aim is simple: to make verified official information easier to find without adding speculation, rumours or unconfirmed social-media reports. Automated updates are filtered for relevance to Benahavís and its immediate surroundings, and where there is uncertainty, we would rather display no update than publish information that has not been verified.
